Overview of the House & Garden Club
1980s - Frances Phipps founded the House & Garden (H&G) Club in 1985 with
Dale Thomas as President for the next ten years. Early members were Jean
Hatch, Betty Jamison, Michael and Elizabeth Bailey, and Lolete Barlow.
Frances had in mind to revitalize the Town and proposed the H&G Club hold a
house and garden tour each year. The 1st Tour featured 10 houses. Tickets
were $5.00 in advance and $7.00 day of the tour. The starting point
was in front of Nice and Fleazy, 7th & Bay Avenue, where attendees could
ride in splendor in an antique car driven by members of the Model A Club of
Southern Maryland. There was quite a stir of excitement in the Town. For
their generosity in opening their homes to visitors homeowners were
presented with two small potted boxed woods. A man on a unicycle rode on the
town streets.
In 1987 local artist Anita Dugan designed ceramic
plaques for each homeowner. The plaques quickly became a hit and homeowners
thereafter have been given plaques.
Unfortunately no brochure or
photographs survived.
1990s - On June 2, 1993 the Club filed
paperwork for Articles of Incorporation and became officially known as the
North Beach House and Garden Club, Inc.
Banners will be hung at Nice
& Fleazy and the other to be placed on the corner at Widow's Walk.
The Club will send an invitation and four tickets to Judge and Mrs. Rymer
for having opened their house to the public during the six previous House
and Garden Tours.

The
Baileys introduced another event for the Club. A Santa complete with
decorated Christmas tree on the boardwalk. Children could climb on his lap
and give him their wish list. Each child would be handed a gift. This
tradition is still going strong by the Club.
Connie Cambron was
President from 1997 - 2001.
Connie was the artist for the tiles at
this time.
No photographs are available.
2000s - Sally
Donaldson became the President in 2001 to the present. Much has changed. The
price of the tour is $10.00. Patrons may park in St. Anthony's lot. Buses
carry the visitors. Hurricane Isabel changed the boardwalk and many cottages
were damaged. They were replaced with tall townhouses built to FEMA
standards. Anita Dugan came back as artist for the tiles. Historic Holly
Hill was back on the 2005 tour.
The Club participates in the
Christmas on the Beach Parade, Holiday Highlights, Marsh Clean Up, Plant the
Town, 5th Street entrance, and other beautification projects.
